Hot tips for Summer Maintenance of Motorcycle
The summer is here and this calls for a close inspection of our cherished machines. Here are some tips to keep your bike mangolicious in the season of mangoes. As the days get hotter, it is important to keep your motorcycle safe from the heat and other elements to keep it running in good order.
To start with, keep a check on your two-wheeler’s brakes, oil levels and electrical components, particularly before firing it up every morning. It is also advisable to check the tyre pressure when they are cold and never ride with over-inflated or under-inflated tyres as long runs tend to heat up and inflate them further.
1. Checking Engine Oil
Check the oil level regularly. Most of us tend to ignore this but an empty oil reservoir may turn out to be some seriously bad news for your bike. Always keep track of the engine oil level weekly, especially if you ride your motorcycle daily. The engine is under a lot more stress in extreme temperatures, which means it will consume more oil. Therefore, if the motor oil levels drops, top it up to the recommended level.

2. Checking Tyre Pressure
Maintaining correct tyre pressure may sound too trivial but people tend to forget it most often. Follow the owner's manual for the figures. The manufacturers specify tyre pressure for solo as well as pillion riding. Follow the one that suits your normal riding conditions. As summer is approaching, do not keep tyre pressure higher than specified. The heat may result in a tyre burst. It is also advisable to check the tyre pressure when they are cold and never ride with over-inflated or under-inflated tyres as long runs tend to heat up and inflate them further.

3. Chain Maintenance
Don't forget to check the condition of your chain and ensure the tension is right at least once a week. Also, lubricate the chain and the sprocket during this time. Never apply grease or regular chain lube to exposed chains; use a chain spray instead. If the chain tension is not as per recommendation, follow the service manual and ensure that you have the right chain tension.Checking chain tension through the inspection window is painful. However, still do it. Keeping the correct chain tension will result in fuel savings and also avoid chain and sprocket damage.

4. Cleaning and Polishing
You might also want to give your bike the much needed shine by washing and waxing it at least once a week. This will not only help keep your bike looking as good as new but also preserve its resale value. Plus, it will help you to get up close with your machine and help you identify the minor defects that may become a point of concern in the long run.
5. Cooling System Checking
Depending on the type of engine different cooling systems are provided.
Check radiator fluid regularly in case of liquid cooling engines
6. Checking Brake Pads
Brake pads/liners tend to wear out with usage and braking becomes weaker. Adjust brakes through the brake nut at the end of the brake rod. Replace liners if there is no more adjustment space.
7. Other Small tips
Check tyres for wear and tear as well as cracks.
Check all electricals from time to time. Don't be lazy in replacing a fused bulb. It may prove costly sometimes.
Check the fuel pipe from time to time. It is mostly made of rubber and tends to wear out and develop cracks from which fuel may leak.
It's summertime and the sun spoils the paint and chrome job on your bike, not to mention leaving your seat too hot to handle. Always park your bike in the shade. It's better to cover it when not in use.
